2018 Hybrid XC90 Bigger and Better Than Ever

It’s been three years since Volvo debuted the XC90 SUV which launched them into a new era. But the 2018 plug-in hybrid model promises to introduce more big changes to the flagship luxury SUV, making it even more impressive.



The most powerful version that is currently offered in the XC90 is the twin-engine T8 trim in the existing plug-in hybrid. The 2017 twin-charged engine and electric motor combine to produce 400 horsepower, a huge accomplishment for a 2.0-liter engine. But thanks to an increased battery capacity, the XC90 will become even better in 2018.

Uber Plans to Purchase Self-Driving Cars from Volvo

Earlier this month Uber, the ride-hailing taxi service known worldwide, announced its plans to acquire nearly 24,000 self-driving Volvos. Volvo’s parent company, Geely, said that they would provide Uber with the base model of its flagship XC90 plug-in hybrid SUV, which has been part of the Volvo lineup since 2015. The XC90’s are equipped with autonomous technology as part of a non-exclusive deal from 2019 to 2021.

2021 XC90 Production to Take Place at S. Carolina Plant

Volvo’s newest plant in South Carolina is still under construction, but the next-generation XC90 SUV is slated to be built on its premises once building is completed.

Volvo’s total investment in the construction has reached $1.1 billion. They were initially building a $500 million assembly plant near Charleston, schedule to open next fall and produce the S60, a sedan currently being built in China. When production in China is phased out in 2019, the United States will become the only global source of the S60 sedan.
