Volvo debuted the 2018 XC60 earlier this week at the Geneva Auto Show. The redesigned crossover comes with three new safety features, not surprising from one of the safest vehicles on the road.

These new safety systems will combine lane-keeping-assistance with driver assisted steering, helping drivers avoid crashes when obstacles are detected. They all appear on the new 2018 XC60 which will hit dealerships later this year.

These features are not to be confused with driver assistance functions, which have been speculated about for some time. For now, these features merely assist motorists and do not take full control of the vehicle. "All three of these new features represent clear steps in our work toward fully driver assistance cars," said Malin Ekholm, senior director of Volvo Cars' Safety Centre. According to research, Volvo's existing collision-avoidance system equipped the vehicles to reduce rear-end collisions by 45 percent.

With more information surely to be released as the systems are tested and improved, what we know now about the three newest safety features is this:

Oncoming Lane Mitigation will help steer drivers back into their lanes if it senses a vehicle in the oncoming lane. It will operate at speeds between 36 and 87 miles per hour.

Sometimes emergency braking isn't enough to prevent a collision itself, so the updated City Safety feature provides steering assistance to avoid obstacles. That includes vehicles, pedestrians, animals, etc. It will activate at speeds between 31 and 62 miles per hour.

Finally, Volvo has also coupled its blind-spot monitoring with the ability to detect vehicles hidden in blind spots and steer itself back into its own lane to avoid collisions. Unlike the first two systems which will come standard on the XC60 models, Blind-Spot Steering Assist will be an optional add-on feature.

Volvo's expansion of assistance features are part of its goal to eliminate fatalities in its new vehicles by 2020. "With the XC60, we are determined to take the next step in reducing avoidable collisions with the addition of steering support and assistance system," Ekholm said.
